Is your body beach ready? 

 While most people are concerned with how they'll look this summer here at Holbrook Chiropractic our focus is keeping you happy and  healthy and your spine aligned! The summer months come with their own set of challenges including increased activities, higher  temperatures and disruptions in our routines.  What should you look out for to keep back pain under control during the summer months?

    Here are a few fun summer activities that can aggravate back pain:

  • Sporting events are great to attend during the summer, be it a child’s game or a professional competition. The downside is that stadium seats and bleachers are not very comfortable or supportive. If you are allowed, bring your own seating to a child’s game or a seat cushion if you have to sit in bleachers or stadium seats. Any type of portable product that provides support to your lower back while sitting will help.
  • Amusement parks are also good summer fun, however they can require hours of standing in line for the most popular roller coasters and attractions. A very slow line might allow you to sit for short periods of time, otherwise keeping your body moving with leg and simple back stretches should keep you out of worse pain.
  • Gardening in the summer, much like snow removal in the winter, can put a great deal of strain on your back. From digging and tilling to harvesting and carrying the fruit, herbs, and vegetables, it all can lead to worse back pain due to muscle stress and improper posture. The best ways to avoid this kind of pain are to take breaks so you are not hunched over for too long, to practice proper lifting techniques, and to stretch before going out to garden.

How Big Is Your TO-Do List?

With warmer temperatures many of us are anxious to begin the process of spring cleaning. No doubt your list includes lifting, bending, climbing, trimming and other activities too. But cleaning the insides of our homes and working outside on our lawns and gardens can make our bodies more susceptible to injury.

Holbrook Chiropractic wants to make sure that you are taking to proper steps to keep your spine healthy while spring cleaning. Here are some Do's and Don'ts for proper lifting technique: 

  • DO stretch before you begin your activity, start slowly to build tolerance. 
  • DO use your legs with a straight back to lift heavy objects, bend at your knees and not your waist.
  • DO keep what you're lifting close to your body.
  • DON'T twist at the waist, move your feet to turn your body.
  • DON'T keep working if you're tired, rest.
  • DON"T be afraid to ask for help when lifting heavy objects.

And finally: 

  • DO schedule regular appointments for adjustments with Dr. Glassman.

Every season brings unique activities that require us to perform some movements our bodies may not be used to. Bending, twisting, lifting and carrying things in order to clean the insides of our homes and working outside on our lawns can make our bodies more susceptible to injury. 

The best way to prevent an injury is to get started with a healthy routine now.  Make a point to stretch before you begin your activity, and always start slowly to build tolerance. Here at Holbrook Chiropractic we want to keep our kids healthy and give them the best chance of growing up pain free. Do you know that backpacks can cause chronic painful conditions if worn improperly? 

       ACA offers the following backpack safety checklist for parents ahead of back-to-school season:


  • The backpack should never be wider or longer than your child’s torso, and the pack should not hang more than 4 inches below the waistline. A backpack that hangs too low increases the weight on the shoulders, causing your child to lean forward when walking.
  • Wide, padded straps are very important. Non-padded straps are uncomfortable, and can dig into your child's shoulders.Lugging the backpack around by one strap can cause the disproportionate shift of weight to one side, leading to neck and muscle spasms, as well as low-back pain.
  • The shoulder straps should be adjustable so the backpack can be fitted to your child’s body. Straps that are too loose can cause the backpack to dangle uncomfortably and cause spinal misalignment and pain.
  • A padded back not only provides increased comfort, but also protects your child from being poked by sharp edges on school supplies (pencils, rulers, notebooks, etc.) inside the pack.
  • A backpack with individualized compartments helps position the contents most effectively. Make sure that pointy or bulky objects are packed away from the area that will rest on your child's back.
  • If the backpack is still too heavy, talk to your child's teacher. Ask if your child could leave the heaviest books and electronic items such as iPads and laptop computers at school, and bring home only lighter hand-out materials.

Here are some tips to minimize low back and neck pain on long drives 

  • Visit Holbrook Chiropractic BEFORE your trip to keep your spine aligned and prevent injuries before they happen!  
  • Use a lumbar support pillow to help reduce stress on your lower back and maintain proper alignment.
  • Good Posture minimizes strain on your neck shoulders and lower back. Adjust your seat and mirrors so you can reach the pedals comfortably.
  • Take Driving Breaks and Stretch If you suffer from neck or low back pain stop and stretch every 30 - 60 minutes.
  • Move often. Change position as you're able, cruise control can help you rest your legs.
  • Share the load. Take turns relaxing both your body and your mind.
  • Pack Smart. Lift luggage with your legs, not your back. Hold heavy items close to your body and ask for help!
  • If your pain intensifies STOP and rest* use an ice pack and lay down with a pillow under your knees.
